AMINEF is delighted to share the news of the latest publication of US Fulbright alumna, Janet Steele, titled “Mediating Islam, Cosmopolitan Journalisms in Muslim Southeast Asia.”
The book examines day-to-day reporting practices of Muslim professionals, from conservative scripturalists to pluralist cosmopolitans, at five exemplary news organizations in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Dr. Steele is an associate professor of journalism at the George Washington University and the director of the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication. She received her Ph.D. in History from the Johns Hopkins University and focuses on how culture is communicated through the mass media.
A former Fulbright professor in the American Studies program at the University of Indonesia (1997-8), she was awarded a second Fulbright teaching and research grant to Jakarta’s Dr. Soetomo Press Institute for 2005-2006.
