On Monday, January 13, 2025, SMKN 5 Pontianak hosted its WORDS Local Competition, an annual storytelling and storybook event organized by AMINEF in collaboration with the Fulbright Association. The competition featured eight talented students from various classes who showcased their creativity and English proficiency through the theme “Tradition.”
The event began with opening remarks by ETA Hira Baig and school headmaster Ibu Millu Hatriwati, setting the stage for a morning filled with engaging stories and cultural celebrations. Each participant brought the theme to life by sharing heartfelt tales about family customs, local traditions, and personal heritage, captivating both the audience and the judges.
A distinguished panel of judges evaluated the students’ efforts, including Anjas Abdullah, Egy Prasetya, and Kylie Eiselstein. The judging criteria focused on storybook quality and storytelling performance, emphasizing creativity, audience engagement, and cultural relevance.
After intense deliberation, 10th-grader Nikita Kuorifai from X Kecantikan 2 emerged as the winner and will proudly represent SMKN 5 Pontianak at the national competition in Jakarta this February. Zahra Dwi Agustine secured second place, while Sella Sarazha Andini took third place.
The event highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage through storytelling while fostering English language development. Students left inspired and eager to continue exploring their creativity, making the competition a resounding success.
