The students are not the only ones eager to learn English at SMA N 1 Sangatta Utara. The teachers also love to practice their English with ETA Lucy Srour. Teachers are eager to speak English with Lucy in the teachers room, so she started an English Teachers Club. This way the teachers also have a space to ask questions and practice English. Lucy likes to say to her fellow teachers, “bahasa baru bersama” or new languages together. She practices Indonesian, while they practice English!

Every Friday after school the teachers gather to practice common English and learn about the culture in America. Lucy has shared a range of everyday topics like food, high school, and jobs in America. October was an extra special month for English Teachers Club because they celebrated Halloween! During the week of Halloween, they had a special Halloween themed teacher’s English club. Lucy was able to show them how she likes to celebrate Halloween in America. The lesson for that week included witch-themed tongue twisters, candy tasting, singing “Ghostbusters,” and carving Jack-O-Lanterns. Lucy could not find pumpkins, so instead their Jack-O-Lanterns were made from watermelon. Even without the pumpkins, the Halloween spirit was still alive!
