Eight talented students spent the month of February writing and illustrating storybooks for the 2020 WORDS storytelling competition. ETA Emilie Tomas was so touched to see the hard work they put into their stories. Even though only one student would move on to the national competition in Jakarta, she wanted each student to leave the experience feeling proud of what they had created.
A few days before the official event, all of the participants gathered for a dress rehearsal. Inspired by the suggestion from a past ETA, Emilie had a surprised planned – cake! After all of the students had a chance to practice they enjoyed the treat together. It was a great chance for Emilie to tell them how proud she was of each and every one of them. The students really appreciated the gesture and it boosted their confidence going into the competition.
On Thursday, the students finally presented their stories to an excited audience of judges, classmates, and teachers. 11th grader Chandramauli Isaac won first place with a heroic time-traveler who undoes damage to the planet. Isaac and Emilie will be headed to Jakarta to compete with all of the other ETAs and champions!
Emilie Tomas is currently teaching at SMA Unggul Del in Laguboti, North Sumatra.
