This past month ETA Ammarah Rehman officially opened the English Library in her house!

The English Library was created with Pak Anto, a passionate English teacher in MAN 2. Ammarah converted an extra bedroom in her house into an English Library filled with books for everyone. The students took ownership of the room and made an apple tree on the wall.

Additionally, the students have covered an entire wall with artwork and classwork. The library is open every day for all MAN 2 students.

Ammarah has also created incentives to encourage students to read and visit the library. Students will receive a bookmark and sticker with the English Library logo on it if they simply visit the library. Students will also receive a pin with the English Library logo if they are able to finish a book and tell Ammarah about the plot. After they receive a pin, Ammarah will take their picture with the book they finished and hang it under the “Bookworm” wall. The wall will display pictures of all the students who have read a book. The more books students read the more pictures will be displayed! The students passionately compete with each other to receive a pin and come every day in order to finish a book.

Ammarah has also hung up posters around the school to encourage students to come and wears her English Library pin to remind students to visit. Within the first few weeks, the library has already received hundreds of visitors and dozens of students have already finished a book. Ammarah hopes to receive thousands of books for the library and wants to make the library accessible for all students in Bukittinggi.
