During September, ETA Sophia Lockwood has been finding little ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) in a hectic mid-term season. One of Sophia’s favorite activities has been teaching the students the macarena as a warm-up. A lot more hips and arms are moving at MAN 2 Klaten than ever before.
English Club has been a great space for exploring some of the more complex parts of HHM. During English, Sophia explained that Hispanic is an identity that many people have in the United States and other parts of Central and South America. Her students were astounded to find out that so many people spoke Spanish, along with English in the United States! Sophia talked a bit about immigration with the students, and they felt that there were even similarities with their own country.
Sophia has noticed that a lot of the English Club students love to draw, so she prepared a list of names of famous Hispanic persons that the students would pick out of a hat. From there, they created profiles of these people to display the diversity and talents of Hispanic people. All in all, the students were probably the most impressed with Frida Kahlo’s famous eyebrows.
Sophia Lockwood is currently teaching at MAN 2 Klaten, Central Java.
