January meant returning to the classroom for ETA Emma Muth at SMAN 1 Temanggung. After a productive Mid-Year Conference, Emma and her co-teacher, Bu Suko, were ready to get back to work planning interesting and productive lessons for their 11th graders.
The first order of business was cause and effect.
Emma and Bu Suko’s lesson included an interactive scavenger hunt, where students worked together to write various “causes” and “effects” on sticky notes. Student pairs hid their “causes” around the room and exchanged “effects” with other students. The first student to find the matching “cause” won.
This activity was followed by a cause and effect mapping activity, which allowed students to unleash their creativity. Emma really enjoys incorporating both movement and artistic expression in her lessons with Bu Suko. The two of them find this makes lessons dynamic and encourages participation from all students in the class. Now that Emma’s grant has passed its halfway point, this teaching duo is looking forward to coming up with new ideas for the upcoming semester.
Emma Muth is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Temanggung, Central Java.
