If there is something that Indonesia knows how to do really well, it is most definitely celebrations! During the second week in December, ETA Riley Heist’s school in Samarinda held their annual school anniversary party. Riley started noticing students planning the different events a few months prior. As the week in December unfolded, Riley was particularly impressed with the leadership skills that were displayed by her students. She really enjoyed getting to see them excel outside of the classroom. The week consisted of many performances, food, and competitions, one being an English competition that Riley helped judge.

Riley’s favorite part was on Saturday, when all of the teachers and students gathered early in the morning to go for a walk around the city. In hopes of encouraging students to become healthier, the school organizes a walk that everyone participates in. Everyone showed up at 6:30 in the morning to stretch through the form of dance (led by students) and then followed police men on a route throughout the city. Despite the heat, everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves!
