ETA Sabrina Verleysen had the pleasure of spending the afternoon and evening with several other English teachers in the Demak regency in the home of Muji, a close friend of Sabrina. Muji invited many of her English teacher friends from her school and others to join with her family and Sabrina for a beautiful meal together and to exchange English teaching and learning tips and tricks.
The afternoon began with hot tea and sweet starfruit, the special fruit of Demak. Sabrina had brought with her many AMINEF materials for teaching English as well as scholarships and fellowship information to share. The teachers were delighted to hear about different programs for their students to increase their language skills. Sabrina taught them about useful English games like taboo and charades and the benefits of small group work. In turn, they asked her a lot of questions about these strategies and ways to implement them in their classrooms.
After this, Sabrina and the other English teachers started preparing the fish to be cooked and making the sambal sauce. Sabrina enjoyed grilling the fish over a small grill on the patio and everyone told jokes and asked about different cultural practices in the United States. A delicious meal was then enjoyed by all and everyone left with a full stomach and new ideas. Sabrina hopes to meet with them again in the future!
Sabrina Verleysen is currently teaching at MAN Demak, Central Java
