“Find Someone Who” was a hit with the 10th grade students at SMAN 2 Sangatta Utara. Once students understood the directions and heard the first “find someone who…” category, the class erupted into shouting, raised hands, and shuffling. They listened intently for ETA Janika Berridge to read the next category, then proceeded with the yelling of various categories and forming of groups. Students were asked to find their peers who shared the same first letter of their name, were the same age, had the same birthday month, and were the same ethnicity, amongst other categories.
After each category, Janika’s counterpart and co-teacher Mr. Hasrul went around to the various groups asking what they had in common. “Fifffteeeeeeeen!” “Mayyyyy!” “TORAAAJAAA!” they shouted with pride. Janika and Mr. Hasrul laughed at the energy in the room. In addition to being fun for all involved, this warm-up allowed the students to learn more about their peers and Mr. Hasrul and Janika to learn more about their students. The activity was also a great introduction to the lesson “Introducing Self.”
Janika Berridge is currently teaching at SMAN 2 Sangatta Utara, East Kalimantan.
