Creating Opportunities for Creativity

Sabrina (1)

ETA at MAN Demak, Sabrina Verleysen, and her co-teachers Bu Emma, Pak Jam, and Pak Syafi have been working hard incorporating more creativity into lesson plans to increase student engagement and overall excitement in the classroom. On Tuesday, January 15, 2019, Sabrina and Bu Emma created opportunities for creativity for their 11th-grade students by introducing them to the game Taboo. It was a huge hit! Students who normally are shy to participate could not help but get pulled in to the fast-paced and exciting activity at hand.

Taboo gave them the opportunity to use vocabulary that they do not normally use in the classroom and to think “outside of the box” to describe the word or action on the taboo card. Students successfully found creative ways to elicit the correct answers from their teammates. The classroom was full of laughter and English! Bu Emma and Sabrina were very content with the students’ performance and both enjoyed watching students learning from one another.

This activity encouraged both ETA and co-teachers to use more student-centered learning approaches to more lesson plans in the future.
