Dr Kathleen M. Adams is a Fulbright Specialist at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta from April 29 through May 20, 2024. The project goals include providing input into developing the university’s critical tourism studies program and offering lectures in support of cultivating a better understanding of the critical study of tourism. In addition to a public university-wide lecture, Dr. Adams will speak to classes about ethnographic research methods for studying tourism, cultural heritage management, and tourist arts. She will also lend support to faculty and graduate students involved in tourism-related research projects.

Dr. Adams is a professor emerita of anthropology at Loyola University Chicago and a professorial research associate in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS, University of London. Her research centers on the critical analysis of tourism, particularly its intersections with identity politics, arts, museums, and heritage. Her six books include two award-winners, Art as Politics: Re-crafting Identities, Tourism and Power in Tana Toraja, Indonesia (2006), and The Ethnography of Tourism: Edward Bruner and Beyond (2019, with Leite and Castañeda). Adams has received multiple teaching awards and has been a visiting professor at Ateneo de Manila University, Al-Farabi National University of Kazakhstan, and the National University of Singapore.
