Dr Wiwik Sushartami is an assistant professor at Anthropology Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta.

Through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar grant, she researches “Tourism and women’s empowerment: Cases in Indonesia and the United States” at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She hopes to obtain empirical and literature evidence about women’s participation in the tourism industry in Hawai’i and to compare these findings with her previous research conducted in Indonesia and Japan.

Dr Wiwik completed her PhD in cultural anthropology from Leiden University, Netherlands. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Universitas Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta, and her master’s in Southeast Asian studies from the National University of Singapore.
