ETA Michael Walsh enjoyed his first full week of teaching at SMKN 1 Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi. He was able to introduce new games and activities into the classrooms, making the three-hour English lessons manageable and interactive.
In his Friday morning 10th grade class, the students practiced expressions of congratulations by making cards for their friends. The cards were not only an excellent way for students to practice and learn the English material covered in the lesson, but they were also used by Michael to get to know his students and their interests. He was impressed by the artistic ability of many students throughout the week, especially students in the architecture program.
Since placed at a vocational school with seven different programs ranging from computer software to welding, Michael is excited to find novel ways to incorporate the skills of each program directly into the English curriculum to ensure that English-language learning is relatable and meaningful to each of his students.
