A few days before Christmas, ETA Emma Barnes had the chance to spend some quality time with her counterpart, Emmy, and her sitemate, Anna. The day’s activities included getting a traditional Indonesian massage and learning how to make bakwan, a fried vegetable patty typically served as a side dish with a main course. Emma very much enjoys and appreciates the moments in which she is spending time with the people in Indonesia she has come to care so much about, and it is hard for her to believe that she met them only five months ago.
The bakwan were surprisingly easy to make, and they have been one of Emma’s favorite foods to eat in Indonesia. Emma is always looking for opportunities to bring Indonesian culture back to the US to share it with her friends and family, and food is one of the best ways to do this. For this reason, she hopes to try some Indonesian cooking of her own at her home in Indonesia and looks forward to the prospect of cooking the same food for her friends and family at her home in the US.
Emma Barnes is currently teaching at SMAN 5 Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra
