Genie Yoo received a Fulbright US Student Research award for her dissertation project tentatively titled “Wars and Wonders: Imperial Wars, Natural-Cultural Expeditions, and Textual Production in Island Southeast Asia.” Genie is a Ph.D. Candidate in History at Princeton University specializing in the early modern and modern history of island Southeast Asia. She has conducted archival research in the Netherlands and the UK and is currently based in Jakarta, Indonesia, for research in the National Archive, Library, and the National Museum.
For her dissertation project, she is particularly interested in exploring the entwined histories of imperial wars and natural-cultural expeditions in the archipelago from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. She hopes her research will provide useful information about the history of Malay and Dutch understandings about the natural as well as the supernatural aspects of medicine, healing, and the art of war.
Her dissertation is expected to be completed in 2019 and is supported by her host university in Indonesia, Sanata Dharma University.
