Let the (reading) games begin!

What is your hobby?” is one of the most common questions that students learning English ask, and ETA Sophia Lopresti’s answer was always “I really like to read!” This was something that boggled the students’ minds. She LIKES to read? Outside of school?! Nonetheless, when a friend brought some children’s books in October, the students were interested.

Thus began her mission for an English language library. With AMINEF’s support, Sophia was able to purchase the books that her family brought from the United States with them. Many books were also donated when Sophia’s community at home heard about her new project.

When ETA Sophia Lopresti’s family visited in December, they brought more than 300 books with them. They arrived in SMA 11 Padang in enormous suitcases that Sophia’s younger brother lugged around three different airports – thanks, Anthony!

After a couple weeks of logging, sorting, and labeling, the English language library is finally operational!

Sophia and two of her co-teachers, Bu Gus and Bu Dona, announced about the official opening of the library during a school meeting. To encourage student interest in the library, they also set up the first school-wide reading competition, beginning on February 1st. 13 books were checked out on the first day alone!

Ayo SMA 11, let’s read!
