During April, the 11th grade students at SMAN 1 Kalianda learned about making comparisons in English. To bring the lesson to life, ETA Charlie Cushman brought real US dollars and coins to class so that students could practice making comparisons while getting their hands on American currency.

Students at SMAN 1 Kalianda are always excited to learn more about America and to have hands-on connections with the country. They have asked Mr. Charlie throughout the year to see American dollars, which inspired him to design a special lesson where interacting with real money could contribute to active learning.

At the start of class, students learned core phrases like “more than,” “less than,” “most,” and “least.” After practicing with photos on the board and in small groups, Charlie distributed the bills and coins to students and helped them make sentences comparing the value of the money.

The lesson was a hit with the students, as language learning came alive by connecting it to vital life skills such as money management!
Charles Cushman is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Kalianda, Lampung Selatan.
