On December 21, the students of MAN2 unveiled a new exhibit to the school aptly name “Sparkzone.” “Sparkzone” is a series of art projects or thoughtful public media that will be scattered around the school grounds that encourage strong culture for emotional health. The inaugural piece (pictured) was thought up by the school’s counseling group PIKR, after ETA Alexander Lopez-Perez met with them to discuss ideas about strengthening attention and education around wellness (outside of nutrition). With plans for the creation of a Peer Support Group on campus, PIKR wanted to capitalize on the idea of confiding in one’s peers in a safe and supportive wave.
At the end of December’s MAN2Talks, “Chalkzone” was revealed to the students of MAN2, along with its signature piece, two large chalkboards to be hung in the open by the English Gazebo, prompted the students to consider the things that became more important to them in 2018. Answers ranged from siblings and parents, to good grades and fitness. Students helped themselves to drawing doodles as well. Prompts for Chalk zone will be assigned to one Peer Support Group monthly, giving students a chance to both read and create aspirations for one another to see.
Alexander Lopez-Perez is currently teaching at MAN 2 Bukittinggi, West Sumatra
