Mental health is a pressing concern, especially among adolescents who frequently experience high levels of stress and anxiety. However, discussing mental health is often met with stigma. Recognizing this challenge, ETA Katrien Weemaes aimed to raise awareness and cultivate a supportive community for mental wellness at SMAN 1 Matauli Pandan by creating the Mindful Minds Club.
Katrien helped her students craft personalized ‘feelings journals’ to explore mental health resources and engage in mindfulness exercises, such as journaling, expressing gratitude, and stress management techniques, which they could integrate into their daily routines. In the evenings, Katrien and the dormitory students gathered in a safe and nurturing environment to share their feelings and practice empathy while supporting their friends and peers. She also introduced various mindfulness activities, such as yoga, meditation, and coloring, which have provided numerous physical and mental benefits.
To showcase their efforts and share their newfound knowledge, Katrien assisted her students in creating informative mental health awareness flyers, now displayed around the school campus. These colorful posters provide valuable insight and offer a variety of enjoyable mindfulness exercises, activities, and games for the readers to try. Through these initiatives, students gained access to practical information on supporting mental health and managing everyday stress. Katrien’s primary objective was to establish a safe space where students could openly express their emotions and challenges. Given the immense pressures faced by high school students—from academics to extracurriculars and social dynamics—Katrien hoped to provide her students with the necessary resources to feel emotionally supported in their ‘home away from home.’
Katrien Weemaes is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Matauli Pandan, North Sumatra.
