The two weeks ETA Darby Jones has spent back at site after orientation in Bogor have been an absolute whirlwind of activity. She has experienced two major holidays – Indonesian Independence Day and Eid al-Adha. Both celebrations were opportunities for her to see and learn about the traditional dances, foods, and practices that characterize how the people of East Kalimantan observe these days. Darby found the sacrifices and rituals of Eid al-Adha to be very meaningful, and she enjoyed traveling from house to house to visit teachers from SMAN Sangatta Utara and getting to try (so so so much) traditional food. She is still feeling full after this experience.
Darby also got to meet with SMAN Sangatta Utara’s English club for the first time this month. Despite a very last-minute announcement that English club would be held that day, over 30 students stayed after school to play games, practice their English-speaking skills, and learn more about what is in store for this coming year. Darby enjoyed getting to know some of her students on a more personal level and meeting new students that she does not get to teach in class. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and has her feeling very excited to plan new and fun activities for the club.
Darby Jones is currently teaching at SMAN 2 Sangatta Utara, East Kaimantan
