Recounting February

Lucy Faust (3)

February in Temanggung for ETA Lucy Faust incorporated Black History Month at night talks, celebrated the continuation of the rainy season during swim team practices and a school anniversary. Lucy went on a few home visits with co-teachers and spent a lot of time preparing for the WORDS competition.

And of course, Lucy ate her fair share of durian during the durian season.

But even more impactful, a highlight for ETA Lucy, was when students read a recount text about the Holocaust. The end of January marked the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz’s concentration camp liberation so ETA Lucy felt this was a perfect time to learn about World War II. For background information, each class discussed the six recognized religions of Indonesia and separately talked about Judaism. Then, students learned the words “genocide” and “Holocaust” for the first time and learned about the role Indonesian soldiers played in World War II. After reading comprehension questions the classes discussed the importance of preventing World War III from ever happening.

Lucy Faust is currently teaching at MAN Temanggung, Central Java.
