Sophia Lasma Sagal is currently pursuing a PhD in chemistry at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She intends to conduct research on mining lithium from seawater.

She holds an MS degree in chemistry (nanomaterials) from Utrecht University (2009) and is a member of the research staff at the Research and Development Center for Marine and Coastal Resources, under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, in Jakarta.
