There were a few things left to do at the school library and with the English Club before the start of festive celebrations. ETA Angela Zhu decided to continue the library English wall after International Education Week and posted the works of students. This month, facts about Día de los Muertos in both English and Indonesian, along with students’ past memories about their loved ones were displayed for all students to view.
English Club received a surprise this month. English Club members had sent their letters at the beginning of the month and have already received replies! It is an exciting moment as students from both Indonesia and America begin to think of how to continue their communication through emails throughout the rest of the year, allowing for cultural exchange and expansion of students’ English skills.
As Christmas approached, Toraja hosted many different celebrations and activities around the community. Angela attended her first Torajan Christmas event, which displayed many Torajan arts, crafts, and performances. She was even invited as a guest judge for one of these events, a Christmas tree coloring contest that was open to all children of various ages! It was the first time Angela had participated as a guest judge for anything, so she didn’t know what to expect. But, Angela saw a lot of creativity and colorful trees. She worked with Ibu Lia to help choose the winners.
Angela Zhu is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi.
