The 2024 National WORDS Competition theme was Dreams, and the experience was nothing short of one! ETA Lily Rhinehart was joined by her student, Balqis, in Jakarta to participate in AMINEF’s National English Storytelling Competition in February. After hosting the local competition in January, ETA Lily and Balqis spent weeks together having fun, practicing Balqis’ performance, and perfecting the creation of the props. In the end, Balqis created a story inspired by Indonesia’s history of liberation from colonialism and purposely and intentionally reflected the current crisis in Palestine. Balqis used her art skills to create a mesmerizing storybook and her literary skills to tell a story of hope, freedom, and bravery. ETA Lily was so proud of her, as she was also named the 2024 overall winner!
Eleven students and ETAs representing Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, and Sumatra all joined together for the well-awaited competition. The multi-day event was one of courageous growth on behalf of the students, connection, new friendships, and cultural exchange. From ice-skating to Monas tours, it was a memorable week for everyone.
Lillian “Lily” Rhinehart is currently teaching at SMAN 4 Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan.
