Ed Garcia conducts research entitled “Sundanese Dance-Drumming: Style Studies of Tari Putri, Topeng, and Jaipongan” in Bandung, West Java. Ed’s research compares and contrasts the musical repertoire, performance techniques, and history of prominent 20th century Sundanese dance styles from a dance-drumming perspective (drumming that accompanies dancers’ movements). His research begins in May 2019 and supported by Institute of Indonesian Cultural Arts (ISBI) Bandung.
Ed is a PhD student studying Music Composition at University of California, Santa Cruz.
He hopes that his research will expand current pedagogy and promote more artistically detailed study, performance, and composition within Sundanese arts in the United States and other countries.
