Embracing Tradition in Cangkringan

As ETA Parker Raybourne began his first week at SMK 1 Cangkringan, he had the opportunity to participate in one of the school’s most distinctive traditions. While the school commences each week with a flag ceremony, the grand ceremony, held once each month, is a testament to the institution’s semi-military learning style.

This ceremony brings together every school community member in a display of unity and discipline. Led by dedicated drill sergeants uniformed students and complete with a military band, it proved to be an indelible first impression for Parker. For September’s ceremony, Parker had the opportunity to introduce himself and briefly explain the goals of the Fulbright ETA Indonesia Program. This exposed students to English in a form that resonates with SMK 1 Cangkringan’s traditions while also building excitement for future English-related opportunities.

SMK 1 Cangkringan’s commitment to a semi-military learning style is evident in every facet of its operations. The students’ uniforms, extracurricular options, and even classroom greetings resonate with this distinctive approach.
In the future, Parker anticipates further opportunities to partake in SMK 1 Cangkringan’s traditions and contribute to its unique learning environment. Parker hopes insights from these experiences will improve his approach in the classroom and continue to shape how he teaches English in Indonesia.

Harrison “Parker” Raybourne is currently teaching at SMK 1 Cangkringan, Yogyakarta.
