Although it may seem like a small accomplishment, this month ETA Kyra Ghosh created an “English Zone” at her school. She compiled a collection of English poetry, quotes and proverbs written by her students and taped them to the wall to create an “English Zone” near the canteen at her school. The English Zone will be an area where all English announcements are posted, and a place where Kyra and other English teachers will sit so that the students can stop by and have casual English conversation in a setting that is not as threatening as the classroom. The students all met together for English Club last Monday and created the English Zone together along with the co-teachers. Kyra observed that the next week, the students were reading the WORDS competition announcement that was posted as well as the writing by other students! Her goal was to create a place at the school where students could practice English and learn about English events on their own time and at their own pace. She was happy to know that it was beginning to work, and hopes that the ETA who follows her is able to continue this space because she thinks it will be beneficial for the students.
Kyra Ghosh is currently teaching at SMAK St. Ignatius Loyola, Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara
