Exploring New Islands

Lucy S (1)

During December, ETA Lucy Srour was lucky to be able to travel and see other islands of Indonesia!

In the middle of December, Lucy left Sangatta Utara in East Kalimantan and headed south to the island of Lombok. There she met up with other ETAs to climb Mt. Rinjani together. Mt Rinjani is an active volcano on the island of Lombok that rises over 3,000 meters, making it the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. Together Lucy and her ETA friends took on the trek. They spent two full days climbing to the top and then back down. Overnight they slept in tents on the crater rim. It was a spectacular view, unlike anything Lucy had ever seen before!

The landscape was very different from the lush jungles of East Kalimantan. Unlike many parts of Indonesia, in East Kalimantan there are no volcanoes! The experience was a reminder of the great geographic diversity of Indonesia. Lucy and the other ETAs felt extremely accomplished and also exhausted after completing the two-day hike.

Lucy Srour is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Sangatta Utara, East Kalimantan.
