The spring semester at ETA Ian Morse’s school began with the departure of a few very beloved members of the school. The Ministry of Religion, which oversees the Islamic schools in the country had its birthday in December, and every five years, it comes with a shift of personnel. Ian’s headmaster, Ibu Yartam, was transferred to a middle school close by; Pak Yusuf, a math teacher, to a school in the city; and Ibu Irma to an administrative position in the region’s office. Before the school had its formal farewell, the teachers planned a short gathering to mark the last day of work at MAN 2 Kab. Gorontalo.
And what would such an event be without a photoshoot? After getting rained out at other locations, the teachers and Ian finally ended up at a small beach. Ian took advantage of his role as selfie-stick holder and sought unexplored angles. Although some said the strange angles couldn’t show off their good side, there were some everyone agreed were good. This picture is one of them.
The rest of the month has been spent preparing for the formal farewell and welcoming of new staff that will showcase performances from many students groups, including Ian’s English club. Ibu Yartam, Pak Yusuf and Ibu Irma did not move far from school. Fortunately they still visit often.
Ian Morse is currently teaching at MAN 2 Gorontalo, North Sulawesi
