Throughout the month of October, ETA Brian Miner met with community members of Sangatta Utara for weekly English club sessions. These two hour long meetings were held outdoors in Sangatta Utara’s beautiful parks and at SMKN 1 Sangatta Utara. Open to all with an interest in reading, discussing, and debating in English about a variety of subjects; the club aims to promote proficiency in English, as well as a better understanding of other cultures, and current events.

For the first two meetings, the group discussed recent trends in the Indonesian rupiah, and social media’s influence on society. For their third meeting, the club held a debate on the role of technology in school. In future meetings, this club plans to hold career days, where members can use English to talk about their jobs and teach the club some of the skills necessary for their work. Brian is especially excited when English club member–Ira, who works as a baker, teaches the club to make cakes.
