Fulbright ETA Anisha Tyagi’s school is undergoing construction. This means that frequently she must come up with lesson activities that her students can do without a whiteboard or desks. Often there isn’t enough walking space or sometimes, sitting space. Her most recent classes took place in a hallway. It also happened to be her most hilarious lesson yet. Students were learning about simple routine tasks, a lesson that makes them practice simple present tense.
A huge fan of charades in all contexts, Anisha had her students act out things like “check Whatsapp,” “get dressed for a party” and “take a long shower.” At some points, it was difficult to even hear the class’s guesses over loud laughter and applause. Anisha hopes that the amusement of the lesson strengthens their memories of a simple routine task and the verb tense that goes along with them. She is also glad that she could bring her love of charades to her Indonesian classroom.
Anisha Tyagi is currently teaching at SMKN 6 Semarang, Central Java
