Towards the end of January, ETA Elena Dietz, her co-teacher Bu Dwi, and about 30 of their students traveled to another student’s home for a reception. Elena was unsure of what kind of celebration was taking place but was excited to come along anyways. After asking many questions and receiving a lengthy explanation, Elena finally understood that the student and his father had just returned from Mecca after completing the Umrah pilgrimage.
While it appeared to be very similar to other Indonesian receptions and parties, with traditional foods like mendol and soto, more hip foods like durian ice cream, and just enough room for everyone who attends, there was one difference that Elena noticed. She was served some water called Zam Zam in a decorative small glass. Her co-teacher and students explained that this water originated from the Zam Zam Well in Mecca and was brought all the way back by this student and his father. Those who drink it will receive good health and blessings. After spending an appropriate amount of time at the reception, Elena left with a bag of leftover fried mashed potatoes and a cultural experience she will not soon forget.
Elena Dietz is currently teaching at SMKN 4 Malang, East Java
