After the WORDS competition, Fulbright ETA Andrew Shifren was an incredibly proud teacher and promised all the participants a lunch at a restaurant near the school. After weeks of planning, they all finally settled on a date and restaurant. Andrew talked to the owner of the Pondok Flores restaurant, Bu Nur, who was originally born on a nearby island. She loves to support local students and happily cooked a banquet of ayam kampung, cumi goreng, cumi bakar, and lawar for the hungry English storytellers.
After lunch, Bu Nur was excited to talk a bit to the students about starting her own business. The English learners were interested to hear how Bu Nur sells Mangarraian products as oleh oleh to tourists, along with running her restaurant. The creativity that the students needed to create a story, and the hard work needed to craft it in English, are the same attributes needed to successfully run a business. The students left the restaurant excited, inspired, and very, very full.
Andrew Shifren is currently teaching at SMK Stella Maris Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara
