The Practicality of Procedural Text

Michael (3)

ETA Michael Walsh focused on helping students learn how to write procedural texts in his two 11th grade classes at SMKN 1 Tana Toraja this month. Michael enjoys working at a vocational school because there are always opportunities to incorporate the students’ skills and future occupations into the English lessons.

For instance, students in construction and automotive programs were asked to make posters of a procedure pertinent to their vocational program. In his 11th grade automotive class, Michael was impressed by the final posters groups created. Topics included: Checking Engine, Oil Change, Steps to Replace the Broken Headlights of the Car, and How to Change a Car Tire.

The success of this lesson and the diligence students demonstrated inspired Michael to start thinking about a long-term Community Engagement Project that will help students incorporate the English language, which can drastically increase a student’s employment prospects, within each program at his school.

Michael Walsh is currently teaching at SMKN 1 Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi.
