Albert I Wertheimer, PhD, MBA is a professor in the Department of Social, Behavioral and Administrative Pharmacy at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA and a visiting professor at the Touro College of Pharmacy in New York City, USA. Dr Wertheimer served as a Fulbright Specialist during the first half of December, 2022 where he worked with his faculty colleagues at the Hasannuddin University School of Pharmacy in Makassar, Indonesia assisting them in strengthening their research capabilities in the areas of pharmaco-economic evaluations and pharmaceutical outcomes research. While there, he presented a number of lectures and workshops to the pharmacy students, graduate students and to faculty colleagues. In addition, he initiated several research endeavors with faculty colleagues that will continue beyond his departure date. Related to that cooperation, he worked with the Pharmacy School Dean and the University Rector to develop a memorandum of understanding (MOU) intended to facilitate future student and professorial exchanges between the two schools.

He is one of the founders of two different specialty fields in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was one of the pioneers in establishing the Social and Behavioral Aspects to pharmacy practice and later in his career, he was one of several colleagues who developed the specialized field of Pharmaco-economics. He has been quite productive during his career to date as the author or editor of 45 published books, of more than 430 journal articles in professional and scientific journals and the author or co-author of about 25 book chapters. Several of his books have been translated into multiple languages and are used as textbooks in at least 35 countries. He has consulted or presented invited lectures in more than 70 countries.

In addition, he has supervised about 100 PhD students and a slightly greater number of Masters students. Many of these students have achieved prominent positions in their home countries. Professor Wertheimer holds visiting professorships at universities in Turkey, Malta, Spain, Taiwan, China, Slovenia and Mexico. Prior to his current positions, he was an assistant professor and director of Graduate Studies at the University of Minnesota, a professor and dean of the University of the Sciences School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia and a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia. He has been active in international pharmacy for most of his career, having completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Social Medicine department of St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School of the University of London (UK). He spent a year as an associate researcher at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and he was a researcher at the Swedish National Corporation of Pharmacies, Apoteksbolaget in Stockholm, Sweden. He has served multiple terms as president of the Pharmacy Education section of the International Pharmacy Federation (FIP) as well as several terms as president of the Social and Administrative Pharmacy section and two terms of vice-president and council member of the overall organization.

Dr. Wertheimer has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Rene Bedat Award from the FIP, FIP Fellowship, The Scheele Laureate from the Swedish Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, fellowship in the Mexican Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Research Achievement Award from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Paul R. Dawson Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, The Donald Francke Award for International Pharmaceutical contributions from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the Gloria Francke Medal for leadership mentoring from the American Pharmacists Association.

Over the years, Professor Wertheimer has brought in many millions of dollars in external research funding from government agencies, foundations and international organizations. Among his greatest accomplishments were creating the first textbook in social and behavioral aspects of pharmacy practice, permitting the applicable concepts and findings from sociology and psychology to be taught to pharmacy students, and his service as founding editor for nearly 15 years of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research, a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal published by the Oxford University Press.
