The time has surely flown by since ETA Sophia Lockwood arrived in Indonesia, but it’s not even half as impressive as the progress shown in the 10th English Club. Over five months, Sophia has seen all of her students shed some of their anxieties about learning and practicing English. Because of their progress, the school wanted to treat the English Club with a field trip. After all the students finished their semester testing, they were off to the Yogyakarta American Corner. There are several American Corner’s stationed around Indonesia, and they exist as a hub for people to have access to English Resources.
The students had a blast! They did everything from VR to Jenga to book hunting. One of Sophia’s favorite parts of the trip was explaining to her students the connections that she has with games like Jenga. Even though the American Corner is Indonesia, it felt like a true blend of worlds for the ETA. The goal of the day was to simply introduce the students to the American Corner, but Sophia also spotted some activities that could easily be brought back to MAN 2.
Sophia hopes to return with her students in the future, and she also hopes to be a resource to the university students who volunteer and run the Corner. Some great collaborations waiting to happen.
Sophia Lockwood is currently teaching at MAN 2 Klaten, Central Java.
