November was a whirlwind of a month for ETA Lucy Srour. It was a month filled with many bright smiles appreciating both the big moments and small moments, like when Lucy discovered you can make a birthday cake out of a rice cooker. Some of the bigger moments of November came during International Education Week. During that week, Lucy and her school SMAN 1 Sangatta Utara hosted a workshop covering opportunities to study abroad, a movie night coupled with a discussion (featuring one of Lucy’s childhood favorites, Akeelah and the Bee), and a pen-pal program connecting her students with students from a high school in Tokyo, Japan. The pen-pal program was a crowd favorite!
The week came to a close with Lucy joining her site mate, Janika, at her school, SMAN 2 Sangatta Utara, for an International Education Week information session. Janika and Lucy presented on scholarship opportunities, interspersed with a global trivia quiz and raffle prizes! The highlight of the event was the incredible guest speaker, Winda. In high school, she was an AFS recipient, where she spent a year abroad in Belgium. She also went to university in Malaysia, all this on top of already being a truly inspiring woman and a successful local business owner in Sangatta makes her a phenomenal voice to hear. Lucy loved watching the students’ faces light up as they listened to Winda speak about her travels and adventures.
Lucy Srour is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Sangatta Utara, East Kalimantan.
