Both the students and teachers of SMA Unggul Del had had a tiring first few weeks of December – full of final tests and end of the year reports. The students, who live on campus, were especially excited about a break spent at home with their families. But before everyone packed up and went their separate ways, staff, students, and their families gathered for an evening advent service.
Naively, ETA Emilie Tomas was expecting your average service. And to be fair, she wasn’t completely mistaken. Familiar hymns and verses made her feel like she was back at home celebrating Christmas. When the students processed to the front and prayed over candles, it felt like there might actually be snow outside.
Yet the next few hours had their fair share of surprises. The main event was when the 11th grade performed a skit of Zacchaeus, a rich tax collector who, after meeting Jesus, gives his possessions away. The students took some artistic liberties (and dance breaks) by giving Zacchaeus two suited security guards and some designer sunglasses. Jesus’ posse swaggered into some techno music, clad in pink polos and popped collars.
The evening also had incredible musical performances by students. Afterward, everyone headed outside for a fireworks show. It was truly a magical way to end the semester and Emilie could not be more excited for what the next one has to hold.
Emilie Tomas is currently teaching at SMA Unggul Del in Laguboti, North Sumatra.
