At SMAN 1 Demak there were the end of semester events for teachers and students in December. The students finished taking their finals, and most teachers were done grading. On Monday, December 16, the teachers and ETA Madison “Maddy” Mele left school during the break to visit two teacher’s homes to send them off on their Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca.
Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, however, it can be done anytime and is optional. With the end of semester break happening the last two weeks of December, teachers were able to go on Umrah. The families of the teachers each set up food and drinks in their homes to welcome guests to send off the teachers. The first stop was Bu Hartatik, who teaches French. After, all of the teachers moved to Bu Rohanas house. The food was delicious and Maddy got to try gemblong, a traditional Javanese snack that is often given to a woman during a proposal. It was a very special way to wrap up the first semester.
Madison “Maddy” Mele is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Demak, Central Java.
