On October 30th, ETA Anna Misenti hosted a watermelon carving session for her 10th grade English club to celebrate Halloween. The fun started when Anna went to the local market with a teacher from her school to try and find pumpkins, but instead ended up improvising by bargaining for many large watermelons. With these melons piled into a becak, Anna rode back to SMA 1 frantically trying to hold them all to keep them from rolling out into the street. Thankfully, all the watermelons arrived safely, and the students were very intrigued as she carried many melons across the courtyard.
During English club, Anna introduced some Halloween vocabulary, shared pictures of jack-o’-lanterns, and modeled the steps of pumpkin carving. Despite it being their first time making jack-o’-lanterns, the students got very creative carving awesome, scary faces and were excited to bring them home to show their families. One perk of using watermelons instead of pumpkins, was that there was lots to snack on as they worked. In fact, there was so much extra watermelon that at least 50 additional students wandered through the English club classroom to eat the watermelon and check out the student’s carved melons.
Anna Misenti is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra
