ETA Meghan Cullinan had a special experience this month of reuniting with her first community in Indonesia that she was a part of as a cultural ambassador in Pidie, Aceh, Indonesia two years ago. Before Meghan returned to the US she knew she had to reconnect with her first Indonesian community because they were so influential to her ability to return to Indonesia as a Fulbright ETA. First, she was able to meet some of the older students at her school, Sukma Bangsa Pidie, who have entered university in Banda Aceh. She explored their city and university, and recounted stories with them that have happened over the past two years. She was amazed by how much they have grown and their commitment to increasing their English fluency, even though most are not in the English department.
After spending time in Banda Aceh, Meghan returned to Pidie to reunite with teachers and students at her school. While many of the same teachers and students are still at the school, Meghan also enjoyed meeting new faces. With them, she shared her experience in Kendari, the culture of Sulawesi, and about AMINEF and Fulbright opportunities. She joined their classes and extracurricular activities, spent a lot of time eating traditional food, and even held a mini workshop for teachers. She had an amazing reunion with her community in Aceh and feels so grateful that even after two years, she was able to continue to build relationships there.
Meghan Cullinan is currently teaching at MAN 1 Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi
