ETA Harrison Crawford was invited to help chaperone a class trip to Bunaken Island, a world-famous tourism and diving destination near his grant site. On Saturday, Harrison helped supervise a group of 10th-grade hospitality students, many of whom had never visited Bunaken and were very excited to see the exceptional coral reefs. Unfortunately, upon arriving at the port, the group discovered that the public ferry to the island was fully booked. Luckily, the teachers could assemble a group big enough to charter another local boat, including some tourists for whom Harrison was able to serve as a translator.
Once at Bunaken, the group rented a glass-bottom boat and looked down at some of the most impressive coral and sea life on earth, including a tremendous variety of coral, fish, and sea turtles! Some teachers and students could swim in the ocean and snorkel in close quarters with this incredible marine life. Before returning, the group played football on the beach, using a ball Harrison bought for his English club. For Harrison, it was a great opportunity to build some rapport with a part of the student body he doesn’t usually have much interaction with and help students be less afraid to approach him and try speaking English.
Harrison Crawford is currently teaching at SMKN 3 Manado, North Sulawesi.
