October highlights a major celebration for SMAN 4 Banjarbaru, as this is their school anniversary. This year marks the 24th year of ETA Lillian Rhinehart’s school. For the celebration, her school had a week full of volleyball competitions for students, a fishing competition in the school pond, students showcasing their talents through dance, song, fashion, and more, and even a school-wide fun walk and bazaar. On Monday the 23, the school had a day-long celebration that featured a visit from South Kalimantan’s governor, a tumpeng (traditional cuisine) creation competition between the classes, and the performance of traditional dances from students and teachers alike.
Lillian got invited by fellow teachers at her school to learn a traditional Melayu dance and perform it for the school celebration. Although she was quite nervous to perform, the teachers at her school met her with patience, encouragement, and smiles. The teachers extended their time and energy to work with Lily daily for a week before the celebration to teach her the dance. During this time, Lily formed deeper connections with her teachers, often spending much of the time simply laughing together and joking over Lily’s apparent lack of coordination. Her fellow teachers not only taught her the dance, but on the day of the celebration, they also helped dress her in traditional clothing and makeup. Lily valued this meaningful extension and willingness to share their culture with her, and it helped form fond memories she will truly never forget.
Lillian “Lily” Rhinehart is currently teaching at SMAN 4 Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan.
