In October, ETA Nitika Johri spent one of her weekends with an organization in Salatiga called Community Based Education. A student at SMAN 1 Salatiga, Devi, is a student leader in the organization, and invited Nitika to join for the English meetings. Community Based Education was founded by three women in Salatiga who are keen to enrich children’s lives outside of the formal education system. They bring community members together to practice languages and learn skills that K-12th graders would not learn in the classroom–namely architecture, photography, art, theater production, and more!
Nitika was first given a tour of the beautiful house where meetings are held, that Pak Aris and his son Husayen built. Then, she gave a presentation on the US, and answered questions about life in the US and what Americans think about Indonesia. Nitika was most impressed by all the students and parents who were eager to learn about culture and education opportunities in the US. After the presentation, many Ibus taught Nitika how to eat lumpia and some cassava-based snacks. Nitika Johri had a wonderful time eating and learning with her new friends, who welcomed her so lovingly into their community. Nitika plans to continue attending their weekend events almost every weekend.
Nitika Johri is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Salatiga, Central Java
