On November 11th, students at SMKN 4 Malang participated in the first English Debate Competition of the school year, held at the University of Brawijaya in Malang, East Java. The SMKN 4 Malang English Debate Club brought three teams, each team consisting of three students to compete to be the best English debaters in the Malang area. ETA Elena Dietz had been attending one of their three weekly practices since she began teaching at SMKN 4 Malang. Along with most of the students, this was also Elena’s first debate competition. There were teams from all over the area, some seasoned veterans of debate and others trying it out for the first time. All three of the SMKN 4 Malang teams made it past the preliminary round and one team even made it into the top 4! More important than winning, though, was the experience for both the students and Elena, because they all learned much more about debating in English and are even more ready and excited for the next competition!
