English Olympics Turned Social Hour

English Olympics Turned Social Hour-Kate1

ETA Kate Morrow was working with her co-teacher, Ibu Wiwik to help students prepare for the upcoming Bangka English Olympics every day after school for the two weeks prior to the competition. During one of their last practices, students started practicing for their debate and Scrabble competitions at 14:00, and were supposed to practice until 16:00. When 16:00 rolled around, the debate team was still searching for quality evidence to support their argument that teenagers should be allowed to play video games. The Scrabble player was finishing a game against Ibu Wiwik, and the rest of the school’s students were heading home. The debate team finished building their argument, staying late, then asked if they could all stay late to play another game of Scrabble. Kate agreed, happy for the after-school company. A few other students from English Club came by to see what their friends were doing, and came upstairs to hang out before going home. The group talked a little about their upcoming adventure to buy craft supplies for Halloween, and then two students started asking about money’s buying power in the US v. in Indonesia. That led to a long discussion about the Asian financial crisis of 1997, and the 2008 Recession. Students eventually wandered home around 17:45, after learning some new words, some interesting discussion, and lots of laughing.
