One of the goals of Fulbright is to promote mutual understanding and good will between Americans and Indonesians. ETA Jam Sulahry took on this challenge by seeking out new skills to learn through the local people. Even though there are many differences between Indonesia and America (language, culture, food, etc.) there are some things that are universal. For example, shooting a bow and arrow is going to be similar whether you are in Indonesia, American, or Spain. Jam befriended some locals at a coffee shop who owned an archery range and spent a couple of afternoons learning archery. Jam learned through this mutual exchange (language practice for archery skills) that even in such seemingly different places, there are always points of connectivity. Jam plans to continue this friendship long after his time in Indonesia is over. His archery adventure has led to him learning more about Minang culture.
Jam Sulahry is currently teaching at SMAN 15 Padang, West Sumatra
