During the final week of classes at SMKN 7 Semarang, ETA Sam Chen held the first annual SMKN7 English Olympics in his Grade X classes. Splitting the students into six teams, Sam assigned each group an English-speaking country (England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S.), and gave students time to create their own national flags. Then, after a brief flag-raising ceremony, the games began!
Each team competed in a series of English activities focused on reviewing the material from the past semester. They played Telephone to review Compliments/Congratulations, Sentence Scramble to go over Talking About Plans, and Fishbowl to practice Describing People/Places. After each event, students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams had the opportunity to raise their flags on the wall to keep track of standings.
After two days of grueling competition, Mr. Sam led the closing ceremonies, which involved awarding (poorly made) medals to the top three teams, and taking a big class picture to celebrate the end of a great semester. It seems like the SMKN 7 students are excited to learn even more next year!
Sam Chen is currently teaching at SMKN 7 Semarang, Central Java
