To conclude a busy month, ETA Molly Gleason held a Halloween-themed party on October 31 for SMKN 3 Pekanbaru’s English Club. To celebrate the spooky holiday, students participated in various activities, including making jack-o’-lanterns, enjoying Halloween treats, playing Halloween trivia, and listening to Halloween music. The first activity involved making educated guesses about how many pieces of candy were in a jar. One student, Cara, guessed precisely right: 34. Cara’s prize was a set of Halloween gel window clings.
After that, students got to experience a quintessential Halloween activity– carving pumpkins. Although Molly could not source actual pumpkins, the different mediums for jack-o’-lanterns allowed students to get creative. After making the jack-o’-lanterns, students played Halloween trivia. Molly prepared various trivia questions about Halloween, including its history, traditions, and symbols. Students worked together to answer the questions, and the team with the most correct answers won a prize. Students enjoyed participating in the activities and learning more about Halloween. The event also provided students with an opportunity to socialize with their peers and practice their English skills in a fun and relaxed environment. Sharing American culture through customs, such as Halloween, allowed students to learn about American traditions in a fun and festive way.
Molly Gleason is currently teaching at SMKN 3 Pekanbaru, Riau.
